Hundreds of immigrants and allies gathered peacefully today in Lisbon to denounce the ongoing detention and deportation threats faced by long-term foreign residents in Portugal. The protest shed light on the growing number of hardworking, law-abiding immigrants who are being denied residence permits or even detained, despite having no criminal records, and despite living, working, and contributing in Portugal for several years. The use of non-criminal SIS (Schengen Information System) alerts to justify detentions and deportations has triggered alarm and fear within immigrant communities.
