Families describe the burden as crushing, alleging that law-abiding migrants are being worn down by high costs and lengthy procedures. At the same time,  government agencies and the Indian Embassy have not stepped in strongly enough to help. Disclaimer: This report is based on experiences and information shared by community members. Exact amounts and figures can vary by case, lawyer, and circumstances. Independent verification is pending.

Hundreds of immigrants and allies gathered peacefully today in Lisbon to denounce the ongoing detention and deportation threats faced by long-term foreign residents in Portugal. The protest shed light on the growing number of hardworking, law-abiding immigrants who are being denied residence permits or even detained, despite having no criminal records, and despite living, working, and contributing in Portugal for several years. The use of non-criminal SIS (Schengen Information System) alerts to justify detentions and deportations has triggered alarm and fear within immigrant communities.
